The aquarium houses more than 10,500 specimens of at least 560 species. In 2005 the aquarium opened an expansion, Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes, which is dedicated to animals that inhabit Australia, including crocodiles, turtles, birds and fish. One of the best-known and most attended attractions at the National Aquarium is the dolphin show. The aquarium also has a new 4-D Immersion Theater that combines 3D film with sensory effects including mist and wind.
