five minutes into our wander, i saw this little guy on the ground and thought he was a dead or dying worm. i always try and save worms who get stranded, so i went to pick him up and discovered he was a wee snake. he was about five inches long and tried to rely on stillness and his camouflage at first, but then decided he'd better flee. thankfully he tolerated being picked up and relaxed a little, but not enough that i could get a lot of shots - rod got some great ones, though. trying to shoot small, ground-dwelling animals is now almost impossible. having metal knees means i'll have to learn new ways to photograph a lot of things - i may have to spend some of this winter discovering the magical world of flash photography (ick, i love natural light) and staging on tabletops.
